Alabama All-State Orchestra Festival 2011
Another All-State Festival has come and gone. It is always a lot of work, but a wonderful experience for everybody. And my mom shows up every year to hold down the fort so I can be in Tuscaloosa for 3 days with the older girls. Thanks Nana!!!
This year Abby was 2nd chair, 1st violin in the Sinfonietta and Hannah was 2nd chair, 3rd violin in the Consort Strings. Every year it is different...some years the audition process is really strict and the groups will be small (as was the case this year) and others it will be more inclusive and the groups will be huge (last year.) This time around it was more of an honor just to get in at all. So many of our friends weren't there. Kind of makes it a little less fun. But we soldiered on.
The Sinfonietta played the Egmont Overture, Palladio and Hoedown from Rodeo. Abby was asked to play the 2nd violin solo part for the 2nd movement of the Palladio. So she learned a different part in only one day. Hannah's group played an assortment of arrangements - Jupiter, Skater's Waltz, a Sailor's Hornpipe and another piece I can't currently remember. They had an awesome director and really outdid themselves.
All in all it was a really great experience for the kids. AND we were able to buy some supplies we needed from the vendors that came...some strings, rosin and cleaning cloths...but also a new carbon fiber bow that Abby tried out and really loved and a new violin for Hannah. Abby played several violins for us and picked out one with a lovely dark tone. And Nana (our patroness of the arts) bought it for Hannah...though Abby says she may play it and let Hannah use hers instead. I also got Josh a new bow since he has been playing with a cheapie bow since his got broken. And as Sarah Ying moved up to a 1/4 size at her last lesson, everybody feels like they have something "new" to revitalize their practicing. Yeah!
Sunday when we finished, I drove Abby back to school and then Monday we drove back to Tuscaloosa for lessons, theory class, Junior Strings and Tuscaloosa Youth Orchestra. Whew! That meant 5 days in a row driving to Tuscaloosa. Sometimes it seems like we should just move there and it would be less wear and tear on Mom (not to mention our poor car!)
But now that the weather is finally breaking a bit, it is beginning to look a little like springtime here...and I would hate to miss that! It is the best time of the year to live in the country! Even if it means lessons and events are a loooooong drive from here.
